 Setting Up an In-House Workbench


I needed a spot for small projects—stuff like putting together Raspberry Pis or doing a bit of soldering—somewhere clean and dust-free. So, I started hunting for a good workbench. Most of the benches I found were standing height, but sometimes you just want to sit down, you know? I had to stick to my budget, so I ended up using this handmade tower bench my dad built for me years ago, back when I ran a photography studio from home. I just moved my old office closer to my main workspace, still getting everything sorted out.



After the move, I realized I needed a dedicated computer bench. I didn’t want to lose desk space, so I mounted the computer on an arm, threw on a trackball mouse, and added a speaker. That’s when I noticed the Raspberry Pi 5 wasn’t exactly blasting sound over the HDMI port, so I hooked up a headphone amp. I also didn’t want to worry about storage, so I added a 500GB NVMe drive using a hat board, plus a fan and case for the Pi.

One hiccup: installing Ubuntu on the Pi 5. There was a bug with the Raspberry Pi Imager, so I had to clone the SD card to the NVMe drive. I figured it out with a bit of digging on YouTube.
